SUBJECT : DOS Dir Command on Network
DATE : 6/7/90
FYI # : 060790ew
OS VERSION : All
REVISION :
SHELL VERSION :
GENERAL INFORMATION : The question has arisen concerning doing a directory
on a network volume from a local drive.
C:>dir sys:
for example, returns the directory of sys:\, but also remaps the c: drive to
sys:. The explanation for this is that DOS 3.x uses FCB's to handle the
request, and this necessitates changing to the directory being searched.
Hence, the drive is remapped. DOS 4.0 uses file handles and doesn't have this
problem.
